The Cheyenne Police Department is warning residents about an increase in overdoses reported over the past week. Since April 6, officers and emergency responders have responded to five overdoses, two of which were fatal. Three have occurred within the last 24 hours. Investigators believe this spike may indicate an increased presence of fentanyl in the local drug supply.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that can be deadly even in small amounts. It is often mixed into other illicit drugs without the user’s knowledge.
While the most effective way to prevent an overdose is to avoid using illegal drugs, the CPD also encourages residents to take the following steps to protect themselves and others:

Residents who may be at risk, or who may be in a position to assist someone experiencing an overdose should consider carrying naloxone (Narcan), a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose if administered in time.
Naloxone is available by prescription or over the counter at many local pharmacies. Residents can speak with a pharmacist to learn more about obtaining the medication.
