2026 Mid-year Statistics Show Continued Decrease in Crime
Published on July 31, 2026
The Cheyenne Police Department (CPD) is releasing mid-year crime data, which shows a continued downward trend in crime across the city. According to a six-month analysis, crime decreased over 12% citywide between January 1 and June 30, 2026, compared to the same period in 2025.
This marks the third consecutive year of reductions in crime. In 2025, the CPD reported a 15% decrease in overall crime during the same timeframe.
As recommended by the FBI, the CPD’s data collection is compliant with the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The FBI has made nationwide implementation of NIBRS a top priority for law enforcement agencies to gather more useful statistics, promoting constructive discussion, measured planning, and informed policing.
The data is derived from NIBRS “Group A Offenses” which do not differentiate between felonies and misdemeanors. The offenses are categorized by Crimes Against Property, Crimes Against Persons, and Crimes Against Society.

According to Cheyenne Police Department data compared across the noted period:
- Crimes Against People decreased 17.2%
- Crimes Against Property decreased 15.2%
- Crimes Against Society increased 3.0%
- Overall crime is down 12.4% in Cheyenne
The line graphs included in this release provide a broader view of crime trends in Cheyenne from 2021 through 2026 across each NIBRS category.
Crimes Against Property:
Most categories related to larceny/theft are showing a decrease in 2026.
Shoplifting remains the most frequently reported property crime, although incidents are down 6.3% compared to the same period last year. Several other categories are also seeing notable reductions. Burglaries decreased 37%, thefts from buildings are down 50%, thefts from motor vehicles are down 36.7%, and motor vehicle thefts decreased 6.3%.
Crimes Against People:
Violent crime rates in Cheyenne remain low, with all assault categories decreasing in 2026. Simple assault remains the most commonly reported offense at 304 incidents. Other offenses, including kidnapping, rape, incest, sodomy, and indecent liberties, changed by one or two incidents compared to 2025.
Crimes Against Society:
Crimes Against Society show a slight increase – with 12 more reported incidents during the first six months.
The increase is primarily driven by drug and narcotic violations and weapons law violations. Meanwhile, reports involving pornography and obscene material have decreased by 80%.
This mid-year data follows the 2025 year-end report, which was released in March 2026.
Chief Mark Francisco credits the decline in crime to a proactive policing strategy and a culture of public support for law enforcement.
“Public safety is a team effort, and we cannot achieve these results without the hard work of partnering agencies, community stakeholders, elected officials, and our residents,” said Chief Mark Francisco. “While we are encouraged by these trends, we know the year is not over. We will continue working hard and remain focused on finishing the year strong.”
