Job Description
Located in the far southeast corner of the State, serving the State Capitol population of 60,000 people, sitting at just over 6,000 feet elevation, our work involves responsibility for community protection of life and property, crime prevention, law enforcement and arrest, assigned patrol duties, traffic control, report processing, public relations contacts, and other special police related assignments.

Entry Level Applicants who are hired will attend a 13-week Peace Officer Basic at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, Douglas, WY; Laterals will attend a 2-week Criminal Law course; both Entry and Laterals will be required to complete the department’s 14-week Field Training Program (FTO Training), finishing out probation at the successful conclusion of 18 months of employment from date of hire. Laterals meeting criteria found on the department’s website may receive a raise in pay grade after six months satisfactory employment.

Applications and Testing

City Application and Police Department Application Packets must be printed, completed, signed and on file with Human Resources prior to physical assessment. Applications sent to the Police Department will not be accepted. See application packet for additional deadlines and information. 

Personal History Statement must be completed (either hand written or typed), printed, and signed and brought to the police department on the day of your oral board.  The Personal History Statement will be turned in to the hiring coordinator after succesfully passing the oral board.  Do NOT turn in the Personal History Statement with the application.

Deadline for application:  August 8th; by 5 p.m.

Written Exam - $35 (cash only) Valid Picture ID required. The exam can be taken any time prior to, however, you need to contact Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) to schedule an appointment (307)777-7718. To take the exam on the morning listed below you MUST contact the Cheyenne Police Department, (307)637-6537 prior to the date below. Study hints.

A copy of exam results must be on file with Human Resources prior to taking the Physical Assessment. Scores are good for a 12 month period.

Deadline for written exam:  August 8th; Out of Town Applicants See Below

Out of town applicants only– A written exam is scheduled at the Cheyenne Police Department, August 10th, Registration will take place at 8:15 a.m., w/ testing starting promptly at 8:30 a.m. Valid Picture ID required; call CPD to make an appointment – (307) 637-6537.

Physical Assessment
For applicants successfully completing the written exam, the physical assessment will be at 3800 Converse on August 10th.  The PT will be taken outside so make sure to bring water.  Registration starts at 1:45 p.m. and test promptly starts at 2:00 p.m..  Valid Picture ID required. Assessment consists of Sit-Ups in 1 minute, Push-Ups in 1 minute and 1.5 mile run, age/gender based. PT Standards can be viewed here. 

Oral Board
For applicants successfully completing the written exam and PT assessment, oral boards will be scheduled at the Cheyenne Police Department (map) for August 11th.  You MUST bring your completed Personal History Satement to the oral board, which will be turned in if you succesfully pass the oral board.

Test Results

Written exam, PT Assessment and Oral Board scores are combined and averaged with preference points then added to calculate final test results.  The Eligibility Registry list will be available online at and posted on the front door of the Cheyenne Police Department.
