Cheyenne,
WY, is a community of nearly
60,000, located on the High
Plains East of the Rocky
Mountains. The capital city,
Cheyenne is also home to the
famous Cheyenne Frontier Days,
the worlds
largest outdoor rodeo. Wyoming
has NO state income tax and low
property tax rates. It is
situated in southeastern
Wyoming, approx. 100 miles north
of Denver, Colorado. Laramie
County Community College is in
town, and the University of
Wyoming is a 45 minute drive to
the west, in Laramie.
The
Cheyenne Police Department is a
progressive agency of
105
sworn officers and
32
civilians. The Police Department
works to serve the community
with many innovative programs,
such as a Citizens Police
Academy. In this program,
citizens attend a 13-week class,
taught by officers from the
Department, one night a week to
get an overview of the Police
Department operations and
training.
The
Department also has many
specialized units in which
officers can participate. These
include mounted patrols, both
horse and mountain bike, a SWAT
Team, a Hostage Negotiation
Unit, a Special Enforcement Unit
focusing on drug activity, a K-9
Unit, Arson and Explosives
Investigative Unit, School
Resource Officers and a Juvenile
Crime Unit. Additionally there
are civilian support services to
include communications and
records divisions, a Crime Lab,
and a Victims Assistance
Program.
Entry pay for a patrol officer
is $3473.59
per month; additional benefits
include medical, dental, and
life insurance. After completion
of a field training program,
officers are encouraged to
participate in the one-to-one
take home car plan. The Cheyenne
Police Department has a 20 year
retirement plan for sworn
personnel. A lateral entry pay
program is
also in place.
